#32 - Caroling in Brazil (12/25/23)

[Mom note: Elder Fisher's sister pretended he was there for Christmas]

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYONE FROM THE AMERICAN WHO IS HAVING HIS FIRST CHRISTMAS IN BRAZIL!!!!! Ngl its weird that instead of freezing, im tanning (but mostly burning😅). But whether your in Brazil or the States, Christmas is Christmas. A moment to remember the life of Christ and give thanks to him and our family that we have because of him.

In other news, heres the update on the week leading to Natal (Christmas)

Monday - All I have written for today is that I bought boots! Sadly they werent full blown country swing dance boots (dont worry guys, ill get them by the time I go swing dancing again) but it was both a bday and christmas gift to myself!

Chilling

Tuesday - We were visiting our friend Daniel that speaks a little english and he asked me to pray in english. I think I was translating word for word portuguese to english and realized how much easier it is to speak and teach the gospel in portuguese then english (i hope after the mish I can do divisions with missionaries in the states to get some more practice with english🤣). We also visited the Cartório (a place that deals with government documents and marriage) to learn how to help Rosa marry with her spouse. We arrived and I asked, "How does marrying work?" and I think the lady thought we were talking about us😅 still working on the portuguese. Later that day when we visited Rosa, her nephew Laysa gave us some cookies that were as hard as a Brick! Almost lost my smile!

Wednesday - Mission Devocional! We talked about the importance of obediance and always finding new people to teach as missionaries. And let me tell you, we found a lot of people when we did a Division with Elder Jenkins and Lizana! I got to work with Elder Jenkins one last time before he goes back home this week and ends the mission and we worked HARD! In one day, we hit our weekly goals of marking 6 people for baptism, made 50 contacts with a goal of 20, and inviting 10 people to be baptized! I also realized with Jenkins the covenant we make at baptism to share the gospel at every opportunity we can because we were talking with everyone. We have this mission to help everyone make a choice that can bless their life and without us, people may be faulting this peace that the gospel brings. Another funny moment is I tried to send a message to our friend Douglas that speaks and teaches english and I couldnt speak english at all. I kept on defaulting to portuguese!😆

JENKINS (before he goes home and ends his mission)

Thursday - FINISHED READING THE BOOK OF MORMON BEFORE CHRISTMAS!!! WOOHOO! I was reading in both portuguese and english but I achieved my goal... time to start again! Today was really special because it was full of Christmas music... in ENGLISH! During our lunch, we heard Michael buble and "Text me merry christmas". We then worked with Douglas, Tayrone, and Arianne (Who teach english at KNN school) to sing Christmas carols in the town. It was awesome!

The singing group

Friday - The morning was pretty rough. We had 3 people cancel on us, 2 batism dates drop, and people message us that they dont want to see the missionaries again. Even though this happen, I still think about what makes a successful missionary. Missionaries will always have challenges as we are fighting against Satan to save and help Gods children, but we shouldnt let ourselves get down but remember we are successful if we feel the spirit and have dedication to serve! It actually turned out okay because God always blesses us and we met some awesome people who also speak english! While we were visiting the supermarket today, we got a foto from Arianne who was having lunch there and I realized what my hair looks like from behind🤣 we also song again with Douglas and may or may not ordered a pizza and played some pool🙄😉

Back of my head (thanks Arianne)

pizza!

Saturday - A literal STORM during the morning while we were teaching and we were stuck there for a little bit. Luckly it cleared up when we finished cleaning and we could get back to working. I soon found out during lunch that my water bottle opened up and got my bag soaked! I ended up buying a towel to dry my bag and quickly passed the house to put my Bible in front of a fan to dry during the day. We also went to buy tickets to travel to Ponta Grossa the next day and Elder Da Silva said my drivers license photo looks like Tom Holland! Couldnt help but laugh🤣. The best moment of my day happened with our friend João. While we were teaching about the Book of Mormon, he explained that he recieved personal revelation that 2 american young men would visit him and teach him. Elder Jenkins and I found him on Wednesday and when he said this I couldnt help but feel the spirit and I knew that God was leading us to him and him to us. We invited him to church and he ended up coming! It was awesome!

STORM

Sunday - woke up this morning with some bad news that our van driver couldnt work the van. We then acted fast and called to other people that have a van but no one responsed. We ended up telling our President of the Branch and Cris and we ended up moving the meeting to 10:30am. We then began driving to pickup people with Presidents car and Cris's car. Thanks to their help, we were able to bring people to church such as João and our friend Alexandro arrived out of no where! Truly God is blessing this branch! One other thought I have, when we were on the bus for Ponta Grossa, i read this talk titled "The Greatest Generation of Missionaries" and truly I understand that we are fighting against Satan and the importance of D&C 4:5. Even after the mission, we may be released from our calling, but not from the Church. We are preparing to raise the next generation and bless all that we can which is why we need to have our eyes on the "glory of God"

Mormon?!

Truly as a mission, I have more love for God and his children. I realize the calling I have to help people find more peace and help people live with their families forever. We are bringing salvation and love for all which is also the importance of this season. I truly hope you all have a Merry Christmas and remember Christ this season.

I actual dont know the name of this drink😅

Feliz Natal!

#31 - SAMS CLUB?! (12/18/23)

Boa tarde tudo mundo! Como vocês estão? Como foi a semana para vocês? Foi Ótimo? Foi maravilhoso? Espero que sim e que vocês estejam bem! [Good afternoon everyone! How are you? How was the week for you? It was amazing? It was wonderful? I hope so and that you are well!]

Member lunch

How's it going guys! As always, it feels like time just flies by on the mission. It is weird to think that in 1 week it will be Christmas once again! I can still think about last Christmas finishing finals at BYU and then going home to see family for the Holidays. It will be a while until I spend another Christmas with family but I will have the rest of my life and eternity to celebrate with him. For now, I can help the people of Brazil who are looking for the joy that comes from the Gospel of Jesus Christ. And speaking of that, here is my update for this last week:

Nice pic for mom😉

Monday - We had President and Sister Bikman over to do interviews and check on the house. I learned a lot of handy cleaning tips from Sister Bikman and for once, we had a really clean house!😅 I forget as missionaries we don't have monthly cleaning inspections like the apartments at BYU! I also spoke with President and other than talking about Engineering, math, and building bridges, he taught me the importance of counseling with others. A lot of the time, misunderstandings happen that could be solved with better counseling and counseling is a part of life. It's something we all need to have to grow our relationship with others and have more charity for others as we may not think as they do. It reminded me of something my dad does with my mom on their wedding anniversary. He always asks, "How am I doing?". Even something as simple as this can be life changing and improve a relationship!

Lunch with the Elders
Tuesday - Things today were a little slow as a lot of people weren't answering their doors or responding to our emails. At one moment, Elder Da Silva and I were sitting against a wall and two random kids appeared and gave us cookies. It honestly caught me off guard but was really sweet of them and helped me remember our purpose as missionaries. We are successful missionaries based on our DEDICATION and feeling of the Holy Ghost and it wasn't until later that day that we went to visit our recent convert Ana that one of the kids that lives close to Ana ran up to us and asked to be baptized! Truly, God works in ways that we may not understand but he always knows what's best for us. So for now, we are helping Abana prepare to follow the example of Jesus Christ! When we arrived in the house after work hours, I also watched the Christmas Devocional that happened a few weeks ago and some parts I loved were "Christ was born to save" and we need to "Live in Spirit of Halleluhah" (idk how to spell!)

Bday cake with the boys [Mom note: Happy 20th bday!]
Wednesday - During our companion study today (we didn't have a mission devocional bc we had a special devotional on Friday) Elder Loertscher was using matches to explain the Holy Ghost. I then showed a cool trick I learned with Elder Hall of how to flick matches. Note to self: Don't teach Elders how to do this because they will continue to do it and may or may not burn one of your shirts!🤣 We had Cris arrive today to help us confirm people for church and for a special Christmas lunch after sacrament.

Cris with the boys!

We ended up knocking some doors and found this man named Adam and to confirm his name I asked, "Adam as in Adam and Eve" and he responded "yep, we got Adam but we don't got Eve!". We got a chuckle out of that and ended up inviting him to Church (he was busy so maybe another week!) To finish off the day, Elza prepared cake and ice cream for us to celebrate my birthday and not gonna lie, being 20 is weird. I admit, IM OLD😅. Elza also ended up giving me this basket of sweets (which I think Elder Cardoso has eaten more than me) and Cris also suprized me with some chocolate. I truly appreciated their gifts and birthday wishes. Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes! Sorry if you wrote on my timeline, I can't respond on Facebook as a missionary but know I truly am thankful for all the birthday wishes! Here's to being an adult and no longer a teen!

I like ice cream!                                                    ELZA BASKET!

Thursday - We only had a few hours to work in Palmeira and my goal was to invite Beatriz to be baptized. We ended up finding a time when we could speak with her at her cousins house and originally I thought we would just speak with her but we ended up teaching the entire family! So, following the spirit, we read about Christ visiting the Americas and baptism and I kinda invited the entire family to be baptized! We ended up marking a date with Kaila and Beatriz and Maria accepted our help to be baptized one day! It was both nerve racking but awesome! (Thanks Holy Ghost!) We also traveled to Curitiba to arrive for the Devocional the next day and when we arrived at the office, Elder Araújo asked me "do you want to go sing with us?". Not knowing what I was getting myself into I said yes and we ended up singing Christmas carols in portuguese, spanish, and english for a childrens hospital! It was truly touching to see all the kids and see the Christmas spirit aluminate from them and the people singing. It was after this singing that I truly felt like it "was beginning to look a lot like Christmas!"🎄

AND THEN, Elder Araújo said that they were going to Sam's club and invited us to go with them. We ended up getting an uber with a lady that speak german, english, spanish, and portuguese. Its so cool to see all the kinds of people we can meet around the world. But the best part, I WAS IN A SAM'S CLUB AGAIN!!! AHAHAHAH!

INSIDE SAMS CLUB (Elder Da Silvas first time!)

Friday - Started the morning visiting the temple and for whatever reason.... I forgot my wallet and recommend😅 President ended up showing up and helping me enter the temple. We then had our special MISSION CHRISTMAS DEVOCIONAL with a lot of musical numbers. I was also asked to sing with Sister Bikman, Sister Hall, and Elder Hanosek. So without practicing before hand, we sand "Angels we have heard on High" in portuguese. It was awesome! We also had a quick lesson on what we would see if we had a day with Christ and truly, we would see many miracles! I would love to spend a day with Christ! I also met a family that knew my brother when he served in Curitiba South. Ended up getting some McDonalds before going back to palmeira and heard some Michael Bubble music. Let's just say I ate my food a little slowly😉

Mission Devocional

You remember them Sean?
Saturday - Listened to the Conference Talk, "In the path of their duty" and my biggest take away is Helaman 15:5-6. We all have a duty to fulfill that is equally important to others and sometimes, the greater duty may not recieve the greatest praise as others but it is still as vital as others. A funny moment that happened today is when a bird pooped on me again during the mish (tally: 2). We were trying to find this former member of the Church and a bird pooped on me in the middle of my speech. I won't forget that awkward moment! Moments later though, another miracle happen when 2 kids ran up to me and said they finally had 8 years of age and want to be baptized! It turns out they were the Kids that Elder Hogge told me about and now we are helping them following the example of Christ. So... thanks bird?

83 PEOPLE!

Sunday - Today we hit our new record of 83 people at church!!!! WOOHOO!! We invited everyone to participate in church and the lunch afterwards. We had this fried rice that was really good! We also had the baptizm of Laysa and it was awesome to have a lot of people to witness the baptizm and learn a little more about The Restored Church of Jesus Christ. Truly was a remarkable day with the presence of the Holy Ghost. Later that night, there was a parade with PAPA NOEL (Santa). I may or may not took some pictures and acted like a kid.....😅
Family of Laysa

Truly this last week was full of miracles! It's funny how we may start the week feeling one way and thinking the week won't be very productive but then God knows better and places along our way people and things that need our help as instruments in the hands of God. I truly bear my testimony that God places people in our way for a reason and that he knows better than us. He has a plan for not only us but those we meet. We just need to trust and press forward with faith to be prepared when God needs us to be in the path of our Duty.

Elder Cardoso napping

I love you all and hope you are well! If you ever need anything, let me know! I'm praying for all of you and know that God is always carrying you in your difficulties and afflictions. God has never and will never leave you. Ate mais!

#30 - How to skip out on work.... Get sick!!!🤒🤣 (12/11/23)

Boa noite tudo mundo! Como vai? Como está as coisas? Vocês tinham uma semana última? Fizeram alguma coisa especial? Espero que tudo mundo estejam bem! [Good night everyone! How are you? How are things going? Did you guys have a week last? Did they do anything special? I hope everyone is well!]

What's up guys!!! Can't believe that we are already getting closer and closer to Christmas! Feels like yesterday that I was studying for Finals at BYU and then heading back home to relax and celebrate with my fam.

Smolder on a tank??!

As you can tell from the title, this last week was a bit interesting and different but still, it was awesome! Here's some of the highlights:

Monday - We traveled to Curitiba for a conference for new trainees and trainers. When we arrived there, we met up with the secretaries which means I got to see Elder Araújo again! WOOHOO! It ended up that a LOT of other missionaries were staying at the staff house that night so we left early from the office to the staff house to shower and I forgot that some showers in Brazil aren't electric and take time to heat up so.... I ended up taking a cold shower and it didn't heat up until after I was done😆 We then each ordered pizza so we had like 12 pizzas to eat and man, I was stuffed! (Dois Amores is delicious!)

Tuesday - Today we had our training for new missionaries and trainers. We learned a lot about using the preach my gospel app and how we can help our trainees better learn and become better missionaries. It was also really cool to unite with my "dad" again, Elder Hall! He is also training right now so I was able to talk to him about it and also catch up with him. He actually told me that Jose in Almirante Tamandare was finally baptized after we tried to help him be baptized for about 2 months! Awesome to hear that he accepted to follow the example of Christ! We then also had a lunch which was... PIZZA, AGAIN! I once again ate a lot and thought, "I am full", until they brought out the desert pizzas and I thought, "Just one more...". After the conference, we had to wait at the office until our bus left at 5 in the afternoon so we did some tech work, talked with the Elders there, and grabbed some extra book of mormons to bring back with us. Our Bus ended up leaving closer to 6pm so we didnt get back to Palmeira until about 8:30pm, thus we lost one day of work. I will also add that during this day I was feeling a little sick, pain in the body and head.

 Elder Hall!

Wednesday - Mission Devocional! This time we talked about the talk from Russell M. Nelson "Enter into thy Closet". We learned the importance of having a place to pray with a notepad nearby to write spiritual promptings you recieve. Other things I liked is the importance and symbolism of the garment we wear, how we should think about the temple and putting upon ourselves the name of Christ and that Each day can be Hisortic if we follow the spirit and think of who we are representing. After the devocional, we went out to go teach. During our first lesson, we were talking with a women who had a date of baptism but didn't go to church and towards the end I began to feel really week. We quickly ended the lesson and I found a nice bench to sit on. Making my way back to the house I soon took my temperature and found out, I had a fever. My comp and I ended up staying in the house doing "technology" and sleeping (I slept a lot). I honestly felt in a lot of pain and really week to do anything. We tried calling people to teach but no one answered. So with the conference yesterday and being sick today, we pretty much got 2 days off of work!😅

Thursday - I ended up loosing my fever, but was still sick and had pain in my body. I managed to go out and teach today to find that we had a major storm with rain, wind, and lightning! I began to think "Satan really doesn't want me working... welp I got nothing better to do so lets go Elder Da Silva!". We managed to find our friend Alexandro who is about 16 and already knows a little about the story of the Book of Mormon. We ended up teaching him about baptism and inviting him. Even though he didn't accept, we is honestly curious and searching for the right path. I really think that God planned all of this just to speak with him about this because he has this desire to learn what is the right path in life. We ended up finishing the night visiting a well known family to the missionaries, the family of Elza. She ended up buying us waterbottles to replace the plastic one I was using. Thanks Elza!

                                                                     CHUVA!

Friday - First lesson that I taught today is one of the hardest lessons a missionary could teach..... How to tie a tie! I taught my comp how to tie a tie (im actually not sure if he just had his ties pretied or someone else did it for him but it was a cool bonding moment!) It was fun to also teach in portuguese! Made me use words I hardly use in portuguese so if anyone out there speaks portuguese and needs to learn to tie a tie, I got ya! During one of our lessons today, one of the kids, Italo, just gave us candy without reason. It was delicious and super sweet of him! The biggest blessing today is when we recieved a call from Rosa while we were walking to an appointment and Rosa asked us to meet her at the house. I was hesitant because we had another appointment but we went to her house. Her daughter then met us there and walked us to where Rosa was where we met her ENTIRE FAMILY! There were like 15 people there! We got to know everyone and taught about the Book of Mormon and invited them all to come to church and guess what!? .... THEY WENT TO CHURCH!! THANK YOU ROSA! Later that night we actually had a family night and watched part of the movie: "Joseph Smith, the Prophet of the Restoration".

Soccer team pic

Saturday - We had an activity for the young men today that we helped out with and the soccer field was called "Campo militar". Not thinking anything I looked to the side and they had Tanks there! Elder Cardoso and I immediately ran over and took some pictures! (to all the missionaries from the CTM, maybe we were fubecas🙄) We later got lunch at the local supermarket cafe with our friend Luis and we met the president of the supermarket. She talked with us in english and it threw me off guard! I then asked if she knew about the church and taught her about the church, the book of mormon, and asked if she would like a copy. (Let me just say, it is hard to teach the gospel in english, I was tripping over my words a lot!😆) She accepted and we are going to try teaching her this week. Towards the end of the night, I was walking back home with Elder Loertscher and this random lady just walked straight at me on the sidewalk and stopped right in front of me. I moved to the side and kept going but it was really freaky. I agreed with Elder Loertscher that we wouldn't speak of that moment again. It was weird.

Soccer team tank pic

Two guys on a tank

Sunday - Early moving van ride! While we were picking people up there was a horse in the middle of the road and stood there for a minute! I forget sometimes that horses just walk around here free. We also had one of the most memorable baptisms on the mish. One with rain, thunder, and freezing cold water! Before the baptism started, President John said to Luiz that his baptism will be very memorable and it was! When Luiz entered into the water he was shivering! After the prayer and after I submerged him in the water, he JUMPED straight out of the freezing water and made his way to the ladder. I ended up promising him I would buy him a chocolate bar because it was that cold! Sorry Luis😅 But I am glad to see your desire to follow Christ and come back into the embrace of God.

Baptism of Luiz

Baptism with fam of Luiz

Honestly this week, with the sickness, pain, and trails, was full of many miracles that the Lord put in front of us. I love that Preach My Gospel mentions that no effort is wasted. Always our works are adding up to a greater work and the Lord is always aware of His children and will send blessings our way. We just need to be worthy and aware to recognize these blessings and act.

I hope that you are all well and that you have a great week! Next time I write to you guys I will no longer be a teen!
